Suzhou
embroidery has always been regarded as a brilliant jewel in the treasure house
of Chinese handicraft arts. Embroidery in the Suzhou area can track back more
than two thousand years to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-467 B.C). At
that time, embroidery had been used to decorate garments. The Suzhou area
became a thriving center of the silk industry during the Ming Dynasty
(1368-1644), which stimulated the development of embroidery. The works of
embroidery were regarded as “exquisite paintings in needlework.” Suzhou
embroidery reached its prime during the Qing period (1644-1911). The
embroidered articles used by the royal family were almost exclusive from the
work of Suzhou embroiderers. When western civilization found its way into
China at the end of the Qing Dynasty, Suzhou embroidery moved in creative, new
artistic directions. “Portrait of the Christ” by Shen shou won first prize at
the Panama-Pacific Exhibition held in 1915 in the United States. It was sold for
$13,000 US dollars. Suzhou embroidery has been given to heads of states of other
countries on seventy-nine occasions, displayed on exhibitions in ninety-two
countries and regions, and won prizes at exhibitions at both domestically and
internationally.
Nowadays, Suzhou embroidery reaches new period. Besides plain embroidery,
Suzhou embroidery has diversified into a wide range of stitchwork, such as
brocade-like embroidery, double-sided embroidery in different
colors, random stitch embroidery, double-sided embroidery with three. Recently,
there are some new excellent embroiderers, such as Mrs. Zhu shouzhen, who is
artist of this exhibition. She studied at China Art College. She created her own
style by adding new element into the traditional embroidery. Her works of Suzhou
embroidery won many awards.
