In Chinese families,
parents start worrying about their children’s college education at around the
age of 13. Their worst fear is the national exam, S.A.T. Parents start looking
for programs that will mode your children to be super students. Because parents
are so concerned about what school their children can get into, they neglected
the fact that their children are humans too. Sending your children to a school
that promise you that your child will be Ivy League candidate is not realistic.
Every child is different from each other, each have their own individual
learning patterns, abilities, talents, and preferred learning surrounds. How do
you determine your child’s unique personality?
Students start their
first academic education at age 2 when parents start teaching them how to
speak. We can use the example of how we process the building of a new house to
witness the different stages that parents go through for their children’s
education.
In the beginning
process for a new house is looking for the location of where you want to dwell
so you can start the digging of your new house. You do some research on the
town’s population; examine suitable climate, and much more. The same is with
your children’s education, you exam the hobbies of your child so you would know
their interests are and their abilities. Understanding what your children’s
likings and abilities may help you to identify what kinds of extra curricular
activities for them to participate in. This is the first step in building your
dream house because you now comprehend the needs of this new house.
The second step is to
look for a good contractor to assist you in developing your dream house. Since
you know the layout of your house, the contractor can now develop a design for
you. At this step, parents search for an academic institute for your children.
At this point, you may assist the contractor in designing the house, but leave
the hard work to the professionals. In a right academic institute, teachers
will provide professional guidance to your children’s education.
The national exam
college entrance exam, S.A.T. has always been mystical to Asian parents. The
exam is the test of the accumulated common knowledge of students in 11th grade.
Why is the exam so hard? The exam itself is not difficult, but given the time
restraint and tricks in the exam, the S.A.T. became high school student’s worst
nightmare. The exam is not designed for every student to excel, but a test of
intelligence. Memorizing materials will only guarantee 30% of success, but
knowing how to apply this knowledge is endless.
The earlier your
child start practicing for S.A.T., the greater the score he/she will receive
because it will become second nature. I recommend parents who are worried about
your child’s education to start researching for a school that may help your
child academic and personal growth. A good educator will spot your children’s
strength and weakness. And together parents, teacher and student can work
towards a brighter future.
